Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs):
Potentially traumatic events that occur in childhood (0-17 years).
Child abuse and neglect:
All types of abuse and neglect of a child under the age of 18 by a parent, caregiver or another person in a custodial role.
Community Incubator Lead (CIL):
A trusted community-based-organization that leads BCLC projects within a particular neighborhood.
Healing the Hood:
A BCLC initiative that brings together partners working across seven local neighborhoods to build opportunity and prevent and interrupt violence.
Infant sleep-related deaths:
Deaths where a child less than one year old dies while sleeping.
Kings & Queens Rise:
A BCLC co-ed youth sports and mentoring league seeking to prevent violence by providing opportunities for Sacramento’s young people through inter-community sports activities.
Perinatal conditions:
Maternal health conditions from 22 completed weeks of gestation and until 7 completed days after birth.
Safe Sleep Baby:
A BCLC initiative supporting Black families who have restricted access to information with resources that help keep babies safe while sleeping.
Social determinants of health:
Conditions in people’s environments that affect their health, well-being and quality of life.
Steering Committee for the Reduction of African American Child Deaths:
A community-driven body of dedicated individuals working to reduce deaths among African American children in Sacramento County.
Third-party homicides:
The killing of a child by a person with or without malice aforethought, where the perpetrator was not the primary caregiver.
